Why Ranking on ChatGPT Matters More Every Month

More buyers ask ChatGPT before they ever open Google. Why showing up in AI answers matters for your brand, and what you can do about it now.

Why Ranking on ChatGPT Matters More Every Month

Try something before you read the rest of this post. Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend the best option in your category. Something like "best project management tool for a small agency" or "best family dentist in Toronto." Read the list it gives you.

Is your brand on it?

If it is, good. Keep reading anyway, because staying there takes work. If it isn't, this post is for you. At Sublime+ we run this exact test for almost every brand we talk to, and the result is usually the same. The brand ranks fine on Google, has decent reviews, spends money on ads, and still doesn't exist inside AI answers.

That gap matters more every month.

People stopped searching the way they used to

For twenty years, finding something online meant typing a few keywords into Google and clicking through a page of links. You compared tabs, skimmed reviews and made up your own mind.

A growing number of people now skip that whole process. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a full question, the way they'd ask a friend, and they get one answer back. Often that answer names two or three brands and explains why each one fits.

Google has moved in the same direction. AI Overviews now sit above the regular results for a lot of searches, so even people who never open ChatGPT are reading AI answers every day.

There is no page two in an AI answer

On Google, ranking fifth still gets you some traffic. Ranking on page two gets you a little. Visibility comes in degrees, and you can climb slowly.

AI answers don't work like that. The tool names a handful of brands and moves on. You're either in the answer or you're invisible. And because the answer sounds confident and personal, people tend to trust it more than a list of ads and links.

That makes each mention worth a lot. Being one of three names in a ChatGPT recommendation is closer to a personal referral than a search ranking.

Why it gets more important every month

Habits are the first reason. Once someone gets a good answer from an AI tool, they come back for the next question. Every month, more buyers treat AI as their first stop.

Distribution is the second. AI assistants are being built into phones, browsers, email and search engines. People don't even have to choose to use them anymore.

Momentum is the third, and the one most brands miss. AI tools learn from what the web says. Brands that get mentioned often in trusted places get recommended, those recommendations get more people talking about them, and that talk feeds the next answer. The brands that start early build a lead that's hard to catch.

What AI tools actually pay attention to

This is the part that surprises most founders. You can't buy your way into a ChatGPT answer with ads. These tools build their picture of your brand from what the rest of the internet says about you.

That includes Reddit threads where real people discuss products, review sites like Trustpilot, Yelp and G2, comparison articles and "best of" lists, news coverage, and your own website. The more often your brand shows up in those places, described clearly and positively, the more likely an AI tool is to mention you.

I wrote more about how this connects to our work in our first post on this blog.

What you can do this month

Start by checking where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask. Write down who gets mentioned and what the tools say about you, if anything.

Then look at where your category is being discussed. Find the subreddits, review sites and comparison articles your buyers read. If your competitors are there and you aren't, that's your gap.

Finally, make sure your website says clearly who you are, what you do and who you do it for. AI tools reward clarity. A vague homepage gives them nothing to repeat.

Where Sublime fits in

This is the work we do every day at Sublime Plus. We help brands show up in the conversations AI tools learn from, mainly through organic Reddit content that answers real questions in real communities. We also do it for a lot less than most agencies charge, because AI visibility shouldn't be something only big budgets can afford.

If you ran the test at the top of this post and didn't like what you saw, you can find us at sublime-plus.com. Tell us your category, and we'll tell you honestly where you stand.
