What Is LLM Visibility? and How Brands Get Mentioned in ChatGPT?
LLM visibility is how often and how accurately AI tools mention your brand. A plain explanation of what it is, how to measure it and how to improve it.

I use the phrase "LLM visibility" a lot on this blog, and in almost every call we have at Sublime+. Not everyone knows what it means, and that's fair. It's a new idea, and people use it in slightly different ways.
So here's my plain definition, and what it means for your brand.
The simple definition
LLM stands for large language model. It's the technology behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.
LLM visibility is how often, how accurately and how favorably those tools mention your brand when people ask questions related to what you sell.
That's it. If someone asks "what's the best project management tool for small agencies" and your tool comes up, described correctly and in a good light, you have strong LLM visibility for that question. If it doesn't come up, you don't.
The three parts of it
When we assess a brand at Sublime Plus, we break visibility into three questions.
Are you mentioned? This is the most basic level. Does your name appear at all when buyers ask questions in your category?
Are you described accurately? Being mentioned with the wrong pricing, outdated features or confused with another company can do more harm than good.
Are you recommended for the right situations? A brand can be mentioned often but always as the "budget option" when it actually targets premium buyers. The context matters as much as the mention.
How AI tools learn about your brand
AI tools build their understanding of brands in two main ways.
The first is training data. The model learned from a huge amount of text from across the web, and whatever was said about your brand in that text shapes its baseline view.
The second is live search. Many AI tools now search the web while answering, then summarize what they find. Perplexity does this almost every time. ChatGPT and Gemini do it often, especially for recommendations and recent topics.
Both paths lead back to the same place: what the web says about you. Reddit threads, review sites, comparison articles, news and your own website all feed in.
How to measure it
There's no perfect tool yet, so start simple.
Write down the ten to twenty questions your customers most often ask before buying. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Record who gets mentioned, in what order and how each brand is described.
Repeat it every month. AI answers vary from one session to another, so look for patterns over time rather than reacting to a single answer.
How to improve it
Improving LLM visibility comes down to being present, clearly and positively, in the places AI tools read.
That means showing up in the communities where your category is discussed, with genuinely useful contributions. It means building an honest review presence on the platforms your buyers use. I listed those in the sites AI tools trust for brand mentions. And it means making your website say plainly who you are, what you do and who you serve.
It also means consistency. Use the same name, the same description and the same core facts everywhere.
Why it matters
As more buyers ask AI tools instead of scrolling search results, LLM visibility becomes a direct line to revenue. I made the bigger case in whoever owns AI answers owns the future of marketing.
Building LLM visibility is the core of what we do at Sublime. If you want to know how visible your brand is right now, start at sublime-plus.com.
