How to Check If ChatGPT Mentions Your Brand (A Free 10 Minute Test)

How to Check If ChatGPT Mentions Your Brand (A Free 10 Minute Test)

You don't need an expensive tool to find out whether AI recommends your brand. You need about ten minutes, a handful of honest questions and a simple spreadsheet.

At Sublime Plus we run a much deeper version of this for every client before we write anything. I explained that process in what an LLM perception check tells you about your brand. But you can get a surprisingly clear picture on your own, today.

Step 1: Write the questions your buyers actually ask

Don't ask "what is [your brand]." Ask what a real customer would type before they've ever heard of you.

For a software company that might be "best invoicing tool for small agencies." For a dentist, "family dentist in Toronto with good reviews." For a skincare brand, "best moisturizer for sensitive skin under $30."

Write five to ten of these. Use the words your customers use, not your marketing language.

Step 2: Use a clean session

AI tools sometimes shape answers around your past chats. Use a temporary chat if the tool offers one, or log out where you can. You want to see roughly what a stranger would see.

Step 3: Ask the main tools

Run each question in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Then search the same questions on Google and check whether an AI Overview appears at the top. If your buyers use Microsoft Copilot or Claude, add those too.

Step 4: Record what you see

Make a simple sheet with one row per question and tool. Note four things: whether you were mentioned, where in the answer, whether the description was accurate, and which competitors got named.

If the tool shows sources, write those down as well. They tell you exactly which pages are shaping the answer.

Step 5: Ask about yourself directly

Finally, ask each tool "what do you know about [your brand]?" and "is [your brand] any good?" This shows how the tools describe you to someone who already knows your name, including anything outdated or simply wrong.

How to read your results

You're mentioned often and described well. Great. Protect it by staying active and keeping your information consistent everywhere.

You're missing, but competitors show up. Look at the sources the tools cited. That's where your competitors are getting talked about and you aren't. Your competitor shows up in ChatGPT and you don't covers the usual reasons.

You're mentioned, but something is off. Old pricing, confusion with another company, a complaint from years ago. All of those can be fixed.

Nobody gets mentioned consistently. That's actually good news. Your category is still wide open.

Run it again next month

AI answers change from one session to the next and from month to month. One test is a snapshot. Running the same questions every month turns it into a trend you can act on.

When to get help

If your results worry you, or you'd rather have someone run the full version across more tools and more questions, that's exactly what the Sublime marketing team does at Sublime+. Sublime Plus Marketing turns those findings into a clear plan, and we keep it affordable for growing brands. Start at sublime-plus.com.
