How Reddit Threads Rank on Google, and How Yours Can Too

Reddit threads now rank on Google for almost everything. Why that happens, why ChatGPT and Gemini read them too, and how your brand can show up in them.

How Reddit Threads Rank on Google, and How Yours Can Too

Search for almost anything you'd want a real opinion on. "Best running shoes for flat feet." "Is this CRM worth it for a small team." "Good dentist in Austin who doesn't upsell." Odds are a Reddit thread sits somewhere near the top of the results.

That isn't luck. Google has been pushing Reddit higher for a while now, and it changed how a lot of people search. Plenty of us just add the word "reddit" to the end of a query because we want to hear from actual humans, not from a brand's own website.

I spend a big part of my week inside Reddit for clients at Sublime+, so this is how I see it working, and how a brand can earn its own place in those results.

Why Google shows so much Reddit now

Google wants to show people firsthand experience. A thread where twenty people compare notes on a product often answers a question better than a polished landing page. Google and Reddit also signed a data partnership in 2024, and Reddit's presence in search grew noticeably around the same time.

So when someone types a question that sounds like it needs a real opinion, Reddit is often what Google reaches for.

What makes one thread rank and another disappear

From what I've seen, the threads that stick around in Google tend to share a few traits.

The title sounds like the search. "Anyone tried X for Y?" matches what people type far better than a clever headline.

There's a real discussion underneath. Lots of comments, people disagreeing, follow up questions, specific details. Google reads that as a page worth showing.

The answers are specific. "It's great" helps nobody. "I used it for six months on a team of four, and here's what broke" is exactly what readers want.

It lives in the right community. A thread in a focused subreddit about your topic carries more weight than one buried in a general one.

People keep coming back to it. Threads that keep getting found, upvoted and replied to tend to hold their spot.

It goes way beyond Google

This is the part I find most interesting. The same threads that rank on Google also feed AI answers. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews all lean on Reddit when people ask for recommendations. OpenAI signed its own partnership with Reddit in 2024 too.

So a good thread can work for you twice. It shows up when someone searches Google, and it shapes what an AI tool says when someone asks it instead. I went deeper into that side in how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity decide which brands to recommend.

How your brand can show up in these threads

Start by searching your own category with "reddit" at the end. Look at which threads come up for the questions your buyers ask. Those conversations already have Google's attention.

Then read them properly. What are people complaining about? Which brands get mentioned, and why? Which questions never got a good answer?

After that, contribute. Answer questions with real detail, share what you know, and be upfront about who you are when it matters. Most subreddits have rules about promotion, so read them before you post anything. One helpful answer that mentions your product in context does far more than a link dropped into every thread.

And give it time. Reddit rewards people and brands who show up consistently, not ones who appear once and vanish.

What doesn't work

Fake accounts, copy pasted promo comments and threads that read like ads. Redditors spot them in seconds, moderators remove them, and the backlash can end up ranking for your name instead. If that has already happened to you, read what to do when a negative Reddit thread ranks for your brand name.

How we approach it at Sublime

Reddit is the core of what the Sublime marketing team does. We research the communities that matter for each client, write content that genuinely helps people, and follow each subreddit's rules closely. Nothing goes live without the client signing off first.
