Google AI Overviews: How to Get Your Brand Cited
AI Overviews now sit above Google's regular results. How they choose which sources to cite, and what makes your pages and your brand more likely to appear.

Image: Image prompt: Cinematic 3D artistic illustration, 16:9. A floating frosted glass search page with a large glowing emerald answer panel at the top, its edges shimmering with soft AI sparkles. Three small glass source cards hang beside the answer panel, joined to it by thin lime light threads, and one card glows brighter with a tiny lime check mark. Below, faded ordinary search result bars sink into soft fog. Deep dark green background, cinematic lighting, reflective floor. Bold clean white text overlay at the top: "Get Cited in Google AI Overviews". Small lime wordmark in the bottom right corner: "Sublime Plus". No real brand logos. Premium, minimal, high detail.
You've probably noticed it even if you never asked for it. You search Google, and before the usual list of links there's a block of AI written text answering your question, with a few small source links beside it. That's an AI Overview.
For a lot of searches, it's now the first thing people read. And the sources it links to get attention that the regular results don't. So the question I hear more and more at Sublime Plus is simple: how do we get cited in there?
How AI Overviews work, in plain terms
Google's AI reads pages from its own search index, pulls together an answer and links to a handful of the pages it used. It runs on Gemini, Google's AI model.
That means two things. First, the pages it cites have to be in Google's index already, so the basics of SEO still matter. Second, it isn't simply copying the number one result. It picks pages that answer the specific question clearly, which can include pages ranking further down, and very often Reddit threads and forum discussions.
Google has said there's no special trick for AI Overviews beyond its usual advice for search. In my experience, what makes the difference is how clearly and directly a page answers the question.
What makes a page more likely to be cited
It answers the question near the top. If someone searches "how long does a roof replacement take," a page that gives a straight answer in its opening lines is easy for the AI to use.
It's written in plain language. Short paragraphs, headings that match real questions, no padding. The AI needs to lift a clean answer.
It covers the follow up questions. People rarely ask just one thing. Pages that answer the natural next questions give the AI more to work with.
It shows real experience. Specific details, examples and firsthand knowledge make content more trustworthy than generic summaries.
It can actually be crawled and shown. If your page blocks Google or uses settings that stop snippets from appearing, it can't be cited.
Why Reddit keeps showing up in AI Overviews
AI Overviews often lean on discussions where real people share their experience. That's why Reddit threads appear in them so often. If your brand is being discussed helpfully in the right threads, you can show up in AI Overviews even when your own website doesn't. I explained how those threads earn their spot in how Reddit threads rank on Google, and how yours can too.
A simple plan to get cited
List the questions your buyers search before they buy. Search each one and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it cites. Then compare those pages with yours. Usually the cited pages answer more directly, more specifically or more recently.
Update your pages so they answer those questions clearly. Write new posts for the questions nobody answers well. And make sure your brand is part of the community discussions Google keeps pulling from.
Then check again every month. AI Overviews change often, and the cited sources shift with them.
How this fits with ChatGPT and the rest
AI Overviews are just one AI surface. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot each work a little differently, but they reward the same things: clear answers and a brand people actually talk about. What is LLM marketing covers the full picture.
